   Wixom St. Catherine of Siena won the Dance Team Union Michigan regional varsity high kick championship at Macomb Dakota on Saturday, Jan. 15.

   The Stars earned 69.97 points for first place in the event.

   St. Catherine competed in both the high kick and pom pon events, finishing eighth in small varsity pom.

   In the high kick event, 30 kicks of at least waist height performed by at least 50 percent of the team must be included in each routine. Any style of dance may be used to accomplish this and there are no required movements. Turns, leaps, jumps, lifts or tricks are not required.

 

 

   The team may demonstrate difficulty through the incorporation of the number and structure of kick sequences and the height and pace of kicks. Movements should complement the music and teams will be judged on both musicality and unison. Teams should also display an ability to connect with the audience and provoke an emotional response.

   Score are based on categories such as artistry, uniqueness, visual effect, technique.

   Other Michigan high school teams competed in jazz, hip hop and team categories.

   Macomb Dakota was first in large varsity jazz, and large varsity pom.

   East Kentwood won the small varsity jazz. Utica Ford II won the small varsity pom and the varsity hip hop.
