Warren Regina beats Grosse Ile 1-0 in MHSAA girls soccer regional semifinal on Tuesday, June 5, 2018

Division 3 No. 6-ranked Warren Regina edged No. 8 Grosse Ile 1-0 in a Michigan High School Athletic Association Region 11 girls soccer semifinal on Tuesday, June 5, at Detroit Country Day.

After a scoreless first half, Toledo-bound senior Betsy Lueck fired the game-winner with her left foot from 15 yards out with 20:23 left in the game. Sophomore Jordyn Collier earned the assist on the play. It was the first and only goal allowed by the Grosse Ile defense in its playoff run. The Red Devils had outscored their three district opponents 29-0.

“I saw that their goalie was playing to the right and I’m a lefty, so I took the shot that they gave me and it went in,” Lueck told reporters.

Freshman goalie Cecelia Muskovac preserved the shutout with a save of a hard shot off a scrum in front of the net with less than six minutes to play.

Regina improved to 14-6-0 on the season and has outscored its playoff opponents 11-0. Grosse Ile ended its season at 20-2-0.

Regina advances to face No. 3 Detroit Country Day on Thursday, June 7, at 6 p.m. at Country Day.

Country Day beat No. 7 Macomb Lutheran North 3-1 in its semifinal.
